What exactly is healthy food?

Many factors make up the nutritional value of any meal, such as its calorie count, fat content, fibre content and the amount of sugar in each serving. Foods high in fibre include grains like rice, fruits like raspberries and oranges, vegetables like carrots, and seasonal greens that help maintain your physical well-being. Healthy meal ideas are essential to our health because it helps us maintain a balanced diet and avoid obesity and diabetes. You can obtain the proper nutrition needed for the body by eating healthy foods and avoiding junk food as they are composed of unhealthy fats, sugar, salt and preservatives that can cause damaging effects on our bodies over time.

It is mainly because soft crabs are extremely low in calories and contain almost no saturated fat. This seafood is healthier than other meat options.
  9. Charred baby carrots (with sesame paste and gremolata): Baby carrots are loaded with beneficial nutrients. Your body can easily absorb the carotenoids in carrots if you eat them cooked (especially grilled) rather than raw. So, it’s always better to roast, steam, and sauté to ensure that the nutrient content is intact. Not only do they have high quantities of various nutrients like vitamins A and C, but carrots are also extremely low in calories and high in fibre. As a result, they are an excellent weight loss food.

The nutrients in risotto are sodium, carbohydrates, fibre, sugar and protein. Also, parmesan cheese used in risotto is healthy because it’s easy to digest and full of essential nutrients like calcium. It’s also lactose-free, so it’s safe for people with lactose intolerance.
  16. Raspberry sorbet: Sorbet is a nice treat, free of fat and filled with the health benefits of fresh fruits. The raspberry sorbet on our menu is rich in carotenoids, antioxidants, essential vitamins and fibre making them a better alternative to creamy ice creams or decadent desserts.

Ten mouth-watering dinner ideas for New Year’s Eve 2023

New Year is almost knocking on our doors. And the best way to celebrate 2023 is by arranging a grand dinner with family and friends. So, tell me, what are your New Year’s Eve dinner plans? Are you planning to dine out? Or going to cook some luscious dinner recipes at home? Whatever the plan is, everything goes well when the food is divine. A succulent and flavourful meal with the perfect cocktail pairing is the best way to say goodbye to 2022. But if you feel too lazy to visit restaurants in Perth city or prepare an enticing dinner, throw some sausages on the barbie, and those juicy snags can be your perfect gala meal.

A perfect New Year’s Eve dinner

According to you, what’s a typical New Year dinner? Well, it depends on the place you reside. For example, if you are an American, you probably would celebrate with a Champagne toast while Mexicans are busy munching on 12 grapes with each clock chime. Typically, Australians grill sausage, steak, and lamb on the barbie to ring in the new year. People in Scotland practise the custom of “first footing” by visiting a neighbour’s home with presents of shortbread, a black bun, and whisky. Whereas in Estonia, it’s traditional to eat seven, nine, or twelve meals, with a portion of leftovers reserved for the spirits of the ancestors who visit the house on New Year’s Eve. Hence, there’s no perfect recipe for a New Year’s Eve dinner, as every culture follows different traditions on this special occasion. So, if you want a traditional menu or something festive according to your mood, go with it because it’s all about customization. No rules applied!

Lucky foods that will bring luck in 2023

New Year is welcomed in many different ways. Sometimes it’s a great party with friends or celebrating a tradition with families and loved ones. In various cultures, the New Year celebration has a different meaning altogether. Some popular beliefs suggest that eating specific foods can bring good luck in the upcoming year, and in the same way, avoiding particular foods can save you from bad luck.

Let’s find out the lucky foods you can incorporate into your New Year’s Eve dinner and the ones that should be avoided.

New year’s foods that bring luck:

Popular folklore says eating these dishes on New Year’s Day will bring you luck the entire year.

  • According to legend, peas or beans represent money or wealth. Pick classic black-eyed peas, lentils, or beans to prepare a dish with pork, ham, or sausage as the main ingredient.
  • Greens have the appearance of folded money. Hence, boiled cabbage or sauerkraut, collard greens, kale, chard, mustard greens, turnip greens, or other green, leafy vegetables can be used in meals to bring good fortune in the upcoming year.
  • Because pigs tend to move forward, some cultures view pork as a symbol of prosperity. Hence, it’s common to see pork or ham in Southern New Year’s Day dishes.
  • Freshly baked cornbreads resemble the appearance of gold and go well with black-eyed peas and greens. A perfect addition to a dinner menu that screams “Carbs but healthy”!
  • In other cultures, dumplings, longevity noodles, and grapes are considered very lucky and devouring them can bring prosperity in the upcoming year.
  • Others believe that fish, ring-shaped cakes, doughnuts, or cakes with hidden treasures are symbols of luck.

Now, let’s move on to the list of unlucky foods:

  • Some think lobster represents terrible luck since it goes backwards and could portend setbacks and problems for the upcoming year.
  • On New Year’s Day, people should avoid chicken meals, as it scratches backwards and has wings. So, your luck might take off or turn wrong if you consume a chicken dinner.

From last-minute gift shopping to cleaning the whole house, the Christmas celebration is a concoction of fun, joy and, of course, stress. But if you intend to host the Christmas day lunch at your place, prepare to devise beforehand and then hope for successful execution.

Well, you should not worry much because we’ve got you covered. Our carefully chosen list of tips and tricks will make your Christmas lunch with family and friends memorable and enjoyable.

Cooking vs You: Christmas lunch edition

Cooking is a fantastic art that not everyone can conquer. But if you are the chosen one who plans to cook for the crowd, then it’s your lucky day.

We carefully sorted out some drool-worthy recipes that are perfect for your Christmas lunch menu and will serve as a crowd-cheerer too. So it’s time to revamp your culinary skills and up your cooking game with recipes that will make up for a truly memorable lunch with family and friends.

Here is the list of lunch dishes you can prepare at home for a grand festival feast:

  1. John Dory Fillets: This versatile, meaty fish is an Australian favourite that can be battered or pan-fried in herbed oil and is served on top of a bed of mashed potatoes and salad.
  2. Waldorf Salad Flatbread: Craving salad and pizza together? Then this dish will satiate your hunger and hit the perfect spot. This recipe will satisfy all your cravings but in a healthy way. So, next time give your pizza a fancy makeover with this recipe to impress your party guests or to surprise your family.
  3. Pigs in a blanket: This dish has an American variety, where hot dogs are dough wrapped and then baked. In contrast, Aussies have a different take on this dish, where the double-meat dish is made entirely of meat.
  4. Chicken Gnocchi Soup: Want to revamp your chicken and corn soup? Then try out a chowder recipe like Chicken gnocchi soup which is warm and satisfying like a soup and equally tasty, just like a noodle soup but without the noodles. Its luxuriously creamy taste and addition of fluffy gnocchis will fulfil your soul and hunger.
  5. Chicken Pot Pie Casserole:  If you love chicken curry pies but don’t like the crust, then this recipe is for you. It’s a classic chicken pot pie baked in a casserole and topped with biscuits for a golden brown crust. It tastes just like a pie, or tastier, minus the hassle.
  6. Lamb leg roast: A classic dish that never fails. Roasting an expensive cut of meat requires precision, as overdoing it may dry out the juices. But with a bit of practice, you, too, can master the art of roasting meat.

Steps to assemble a memorable Christmas lunch

Hosting a Christmas lunch at home may overburden you with responsibilities and trouble. But before you quit the battleground, here are some handy tips you can follow before throwing a Christmas lunch party at your house.

  • Advance Planning: Precision planning is your greatest weapon to get through Christmas Day lunch and its celebration. Make a menu plan and a grocery list in advance, and don’t leave things until the last minute. Food shopping during Christmas is absolute chaos if you wait till the last moment. Try buying all your exquisite seafood and meat to ensure you don’t miss any offers.
  • Stop being a perfectionist: If you always run after perfection, it’s time to stop doing that. Instead of taking all the responsibilities on your shoulder, try planning for things a little less precisely. Always remember that you are preparing for a home get-together, not a professional client meeting. If the food is simple or the gifts are inexpensive, it does not matter as long as you enjoy it with your close friends and loved ones.
  • Divide your work into sections: Just because you planned a Christmas party at home doesn’t mean you have to shower in responsibilities alone. Try dividing your duties into smaller parts and ask your family members to choose their roles according to their abilities. You know what, that’s the advantage of having a large family where each member is always willing to help you out. So, cut down your worries and make your Christmas party momentous.
  • Book a restaurant instead: If it’s hectic to plan a festive get-together at home, try booking a private dining room in a restaurant. Many restaurants in Perth city, like Fraser’s restaurant, offer private dining rooms for a family get-together during Christmas or other occasions. They also provide special arrangements during Christmas, like their special menu, Fraser’s Christmas lunch 2022, which offers various delicacies to enjoy during Christmas.
  •  Make Christmas Eve your trump card:  On Christmas Eve, try to complete as many tasks as possible so that you stay free on Christmas Day. Clean up the house, and the refrigerator, keep all the food items handy and make a meal plan in advance. If you plan to use your swimming pool, clean it up, blow up all the toys, and keep sunscreen and ice slushies handy. Want to enjoy a tasty lamb leg roast on Christmas day? Then prep everything up on the previous day, like marinating it overnight, clean your barbecue station and the grills, and stock up on some apple wood. And finally, you are ready for your ultimate Christmas lunch.

Christmas is all about celebration

Whether you plan a house party or book a restaurant for your Christmas lunch, always remember to enjoy your heart out with your loved ones and close friends, and your Christmas day will be memorable automatically. In Perth restaurants offer various options during festivals, especially Christmas, so there is no need to worry about last-minute plans because places like Fraser’s restaurants have you covered.

So chill out and make the most of your Christmas holiday. Help the needy, spread love to the helpless, and try to spend as much time as possible with your family and close friends.

Seafood and wine pairing that takes the cake!

With spring knocking at our door, it seems opportune to feast on seafood and a good bottle of wine (or some bottles) if you ask us.

There’s an endless list of wine for seafood combinations that make sense to the palate, from crisp Australian Sparkling with beautifully shucked oysters to grilled shellfish with Chardonnay to the less-than-traditional coupling of salmon with Pinot Noir.

On that note, let’s get into more options that we have for you.

Chenin Blanc and Shrimp

Whether you prefer coconut shrimp or Cajun shrimp, your go-to wine must be as versatile. Chenin Blanc is one of the most adaptable wines on the market. These wines can handle any shrimp dish you throw at them.

Pinot Noir and Salmon

All of you salmon lovers out there have probably found out what works and what doesn’t. Finding the ideal blend, like with most wine products, is difficult. It is determined by the spices used and how they are prepared. However, Pinot Noir is a fantastic match for salmon due to its hearty nature.

It’s one of the few seafood dishes that can compete with a glass of red wine. Make sure it isn’t overly tannic or abrasive—Pinot Noir is an excellent choice!

Champagne and Oysters

If you are familiar with Oysters, you will know it offers much. Trout salinity pales in comparison to oysters’ delicious saltiness. This meal, like most seafood dishes, may be prepared in a variety of ways: garlicky, grilled and hot, citrusy—the list goes on.

As a result, a wine that can handle the variety is required, which is where Champagne comes in. The bubbles can handle a wide range of fine flavour without becoming overbearing or underplaying. Enjoy a bottle of wine!

Chardonnay and Crab or Lobster

Both lobster and crab are delicate seafood options. When we combine Chardonnay with zesty flavours and simple herbs, it does miracles on your lips. These pairings are distinguished by their crisp acidity and light nature. The richness, heartiness, and naturally creamy texture of crab or lobster blend nicely with buttery Chardonnay. It’s a match worth trying!

Gewürztraminer & Halibut

If you don’t eat halibut frequently, you should start today. It has a mild fine flavour and a sturdy composition, allowing it to perform various tasks in the kitchen. The fish pairs nicely with multiple wines since it can be sweeter or spicier. It pairs well with a sweet Gewürztraminer. If you don’t want that, try halibut with Viognier or Sémillon.

Wait, let’s have a look at what’s the secret behind food pairing.

Here, we give you our top ideas for pairing wine with food, so you never have to worry or stress yourself over it again. Can you imagine how amazing your dinner parties are going to be now?

Come on, get saucy.

As if we wanted another excuse to prioritise rich, delicious sauces: Always pair your wine with your dish’s sauce. If there is no sauce, then concentrate on the protein.

A pretty tale of two colours.

White wine is the choice for seafood; at Fraser’s restaurant, we suggest our guests match our delicate food with mostly white or acidic wines.

But wait, that’s not the end of the story; if guests don’t want best white wine for seafood, we recommend lighter reds. Amazing examples are pinot noirs, dolcettos or the fantastic Etna Rosso style of wine. There is always the option to find the right colour of wine for your guests.

Sweets can never disappoint.

With sweet dishes, you always need a sweeter kind of wine; otherwise, it will be swamped – wine should be at least as sweet as the dish.

What are the ultimate no-no’s?

The most significant thing to us regarding pairing is acidity. The acid helps to hold the wine and cut through meals, allowing you to enjoy your food and wine even more.

For us, acid complements acid. High-acid foods should never be paired with low-acid wines, as the wine would taste flat and unpleasant.

Never forget the basics.

Consider whether the dish is sweet, spicy, fatty, or savoury. Sweet wine varieties should be paired with sweeter wines. Spicy foods necessitate a sweeter wine with spicy undertones.

Tannic wines complement fatty dishes, while savoury wines complement savoury foods. If you want to learn how to pair wine with food at the highest level, treat yourself to dinner and can always ask your sommelier to explain their choice of wine pairing.

Fraser’s Restaurant has a very delicate seafood menu and follows seasonal produce too. We match our food with incredible wines for Perth on our menu.

An amazing thing about seafood being so universal is that you aren’t limited to whites only. Many dishes pair very well with red wines, too. Fraser’s Restaurant has the ideal bottle of wine to serve alongside it, no matter what seafood you plan to eat at your next meal. You’re sure to find the right fit with a broad range of whites and reds. If you’re unsure of what to select, we’re always here to help!
